FREELANCE HACK
Since March, I have gone from full time, to unemployed, to spotty freelance, to full time freelance. (Add in some world traveling in there too...) Needless to say, there is a mean learning curve. Full time freelance is no joke. Even things like being in an office, when I've developed a habit of working in my lulu's with a homemade poached egg and sautéed kale as my wingman, can hinder my process.
I have been frequenting blogs and any kind of news source I can get my hands on that offer tips and tricks for freelancing. My sweet friend, Belinda of Belinda Love Lee designs, has a few that are super helpful, as well as Breanna. I've needed as much help as I can get.
Some things I have learned thus far:
- Discover your unique process and stick to it. I work best tracking my hours with a pencil and paper, and keeping my tasks separated out on mini clipboards. In an industry where I am so plugged in all the time, something that I can get my hands on helps me to stay focused and organized. Furthering my, "I'm actually a grandma" complex.
- Respond to emails ASAP. We all know this one, and most of us still fall into the trap here and there. The more you can keep from getting backlogged, the better.
- Set aside time for the things you love. I love to cook. It is one of my passions. For me, it is a huge stress reliever. As soon as I started introducing a daily workout and cooking schedule again, I got into a groove and it helped me focus on projects at work.
- Create a beautiful (and clean) workspace. This one I am still working on, but I am getting there! Safe to say that Target, Overstock, and Anthropologie are my life savers. Also, I keep my essentials handy at all times: a quick snack (almonds), chapstick, and a coffee mug.
What are some of your favorite "freelance hacks"? I'd love to hear about how you keep your freelance life organized!
